Murmurations II

Concertgebouw Brugge gaf Stevie Wishart een compositieopdracht voor stem: Murmurations II is geinspireerd door 'flocking', het fenomeen van zwerm spreeuwen. Ik werkte aan de electronische klanken voor Murmurations II, samen met Joseph Kay, met assistentie van Jannes Desmet. De soundscape is een 5 kanaals surround compositie op basis van foleygeluiden die ik opnam en bewerkte met granulaire synthese.

Het stuk wordt in première opgevoerd in openlucht op 9 september 2021. In de tuin van het gezellehuis wordt naats Murmurations ook Voicing the dawn opgevoerd door het Pluto Ensemble, waarvoor ik in 2020 reeds met Stevie samenwerkte.

Het eerste morgenlicht sluipt de tuin van het Gezellehuis binnen. Voorzichtig mengt gefluister zich met de zang van ontwakende vogels. Als een wolk dansen de klanken in de lucht. Stevie Wishart integreert Gezelles eigen woorden in Murmurations II, genoemd naar de imposante zwermende beweging van een groep vogels. Voicing the Dawn analyseert en herinterpreteert het ochtendlijke vogelkoor. Clément Janequins beeldende Chant des oiseaux biedt een 16e-eeuws antwoord.

An enchanting walk in words and sounds
Early morning light creeps into the garden of the Gezelle House. Whispers mingle softly with the song of awakening birds. Sounds dance through the air like a cloud. In Murmurations II – named after the awe-inspiring synchronised flight of a flock of birds – Stevie Wishart integrates poet Guido Gezelle's own words. Voicing the Dawn analyses and reinterprets the birds’ dawn chorus. And Clément Janequin's evocative Chant des oiseaux offers a 16th-century vision.
